Pininfarina x JAS Tensei NSX Emerges from Its Cocoon

Back in 1990, Honda’s first NSX was a sight to behold, with sharp lines that made the car feel like it was slicing through the air as lightly as a scalpel. Over three decades later, the same style and soul are given fresh life as the Tensei NSX. This car is the result of a collaboration between Pininfarina’s design team and JAS Motorsport’s engineers, who have done wonders with a donor chassis from the first-generation NSX, dressing it up in a carbon fiber body that is equal parts tribute to the old car and a step forward.

Carbon fiber is the Tensei’s new exterior skin, a material that manages to take a few pounds off the car while also making every feature more sharper. You still get those pop-up headlights, because who wants to forget them? They frame a front end that’s decidedly more bold than before, with larger fenders and a hood scoop that sucks cool air in for the engine, which is just behind that hood. Those fenders are now large enough to accommodate some significant wheels that fill up the arches, and the entire vehicle appears to be resting more solidly on the road, particularly at the rear, where the weight feels more equally distributed now.

Air intakes have been drilled in the sides and rear quarters, and they look to be sending a large volume of air to both the engine and the powerhouse in the middle. Around back, there are some incredibly clean and modern full-width taillights, with two exhaust outlets that look like little A’s, and a low-slung spoiler that appears to do an excellent job of returning to the original NSX’s roots in terms of discretion. Then there are JAS emblems in place of the Honda writing, as a small respect to the builders who poured their blood and sweat into every panel. This car will not give you the left- or right-handed driver treatment, regardless of which side of the road you’re on; it will happily accommodate either of you.

The engine is a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter V6 with the same displacement as the original NSX, but tuned by JAS to provide significantly more power, far exceeding the original 270 horsepower. They’re keeping the exact figure under wraps for the time being, but there are rumors from track sessions that it’s most likely influenced by the later 3.2-liter variants, which boasts 290 horsepower. The brakes and suspension are straight from JAS’s competition playbook, and they’ll come from the NSX GT3 racer or the Civic Type R, ensuring the Tensei chews up corners with the ferocity of a car born for Fuji Speedway’s hairpins. Despite its racing roots, this is really a road vehicle at heart, designed to eat up kilometers as readily as it does turns.

Inside the cockpit, the story becomes even more engaging, as Pininfarina focuses on creating an environment where design is more than just looking nice, but also works really well. The seats are designed to embrace the driver and passenger in comfort, with high-grip materials that prioritize feel above dazzling appearance. The dashboards are low and broad, with all of the knobs and buttons within easy reach, reminiscent of the original NSX’s driver-centric design. JAS and Pininfarina collaborate to demonstrate that the true key to a fantastic car is how you feel when you step inside: alive, connected, and just a little obsessive.

What about the price tag? It will put you firmly in the seven-figure range, a price that reflects handcrafted attention that goes into building each and every one of these restomods. Orders were privately accepted at Fuji Raceway for a select few just last month, which means they’re already sold out.
