Berlin is preparing a bid to host the Olympic Games again, possibly 100 years after presenting those of 1936 during the Nazi regime.
The mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, wants to unveil the bid for the presentation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the support of four other German states, on Tuesday at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
The invitation for the presentation sent on Friday does not specify which Olympics the city wants to present its candidacy for, but the next available edition is that of 2036 — 100 years after the presentation of the Berlin Games. The German Olympic Federation has said that a bid is also possible for 2040.
The 2028 Games will be held in Los Angeles, and the 2032 Games will be held in Brisbane, Australia.
The states of Brandenburg, Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein would also host competitions according to Berlin’s candidacy.
The Berlin Olympic Stadium was built for the 1936 Games. Adolf Hitler was personally involved in the design and construction of the 100,000-seat stadium after the Nazi regime seized power in 1933 — two years after the city was chosen to host the Olympic Games.
Hitler was initially reluctant to host the Games, but changed his mind when he became convinced by its propaganda potential. He invited Leni Riefenstahl to film the event and she used the material in her film “Olympia.”
The stadium is still in use and hosted the Euro final between Spain and England last year.
