From the Eiffel Tower to Luxembourg, a new life for the Olympic rings of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

They shone throughout the summer of 2024 above Paris, scrutinized by the whole world. The Olympic rings, symbol of the Paris 2024 Games, pass the baton. They left the Parisian sky for the land of Luxembourg, and the ovens ofArcelorMittal. The steelmaker, who had supplied the steel for the Olympic and Paralympic torches as well as for the rings themselves, revealed in a video, Thursday October 30, the fate reserved for them at the end of the games.

The rings under the blowtorch

Taken down from their podium on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower, the five rings headed to the Differdange site (Luxembourg), where they were cut and then melted in an electric arc furnace. After passing through the rolling mill, the old rings are reborn in the form of beams, intended for the group’s future headquarters, currently under construction in the Grand Duchy.

Made with steel produced in France from recycled steel and renewable energy, precise ArcelorMittalthe rings were not designed to withstand winter weather conditions. They were therefore removed from the Iron Lady on the night of September 26 to 27, 2024, as planned by the group, to begin their new life away from the spotlight.

There remains the question of their return to the Eiffel Tower, desired by the mayor of Paris. Impossible before 2026, for legislative reasons: the brand of the Olympic rings belongs to the IOC, and the legal framework must be modified to allow their use outside of Games periods. New rings will therefore have to be made, in a “more durable” material, the manufacturer of which has not yet been specified.
