Epic Games and Unity, the two main American suppliers of 3D engines used in the creation of video games, will join forces to allow the integration of titles designed with Unity directly into FortniteEpic’s flagship game.
Announced Wednesday during a conference organized by Unity in Barcelona, this agreement should from 2026 give players the possibility of accessing games created with Unity directly in Fortnitewhich claims more than 100 million monthly users, to transform it into a full-fledged gaming platform.
“Everything happens in Fortniteno software to install” and “developers no longer need to develop the game on several platforms,” said Tim Sweeney, the boss of Epic Games, in a message posted on X.
This agreement will link two heavyweights in the sector, until now rivals, whose software is used in the development of nearly 80% of the games released in 2024 on the PC gaming platform Steam, according to a study by specialist firm Sensor Tower.
Very present in mobile games, Unity has notably been used by games like Pokemon Go and Among Us, while Epic Games’ engine, Unreal Engine, powers titles like Fortnite or the French Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Unity announced for its part that it would support the Unreal Engine on its commercial platform, allowing developers who use it to “manage prices, promotions and live operations”.
This collaboration is expected to “create more opportunities for video game developers around the world,” said Matt Bromberg, president and CEO of Unity.
The two companies have promised to provide more details on how this partnership will work in 2026.
3D engines are software bringing together the main functionalities of a video game (sound, graphics, physics simulation, artificial intelligence, etc.) in a single tool.
While many industry giants develop their own technology in-house, more and more studios and independent developers are using publicly available engines, such as Unreal and Unity, for compensation.
