The thin blue line just got a little… furrier, with the K-9 update for The Precinct.
Kwalee and Fallen Tree Games have released the second major free content update for their neon-noir police sandbox, The Precinct.
The highly anticipated K-9 Update is available to download right now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Following the success of the recent tow truck expansion, this latest update introduces a fully integrated police dog system, allowing officers to patrol the rain-soaked streets of Averno City with a loyal four-legged partner by their side.
A Best Friend for the Beat
We’ve been thoroughly impressed with The Precinct since its launch. In our 4/5 review, we praised the game for capturing the “feel and atmosphere” perfectly, stating there is “no doubt that this one will make you feel like you are the law.”
Now, Fallen Tree Games is deepening that immersion even further. The K-9 Update isn’t just a cosmetic addition; it fundamentally changes how you can approach crime fighting in the city.
Paw-trol the Streets: Features of the K-9 Unit
The new system is robust, offering players a variety of ways to interact with and utilise their new partner.
Officers can now deploy a fully trained working dog directly from the precinct kennels. Once on the beat, your canine companion isn’t just for show; they will obey a specific range of tactical commands. You can order them to subdue dangerous attackers, chase down fleeing suspects who might otherwise outrun you, and even sniff out concealed narcotics during stops.
Being a handler is a responsibility. Before heading out, you can visit the kennels to wash and feed your partner, ensuring they are ready for duty. You can also choose between different dog breeds and equip them with various harnesses and collars to match your own policing style.
The update also introduces fresh gameplay opportunities. A new callout type tasks your K-9 with tracking a wanted suspect using a recovered scrap of clothing. Even if you choose to patrol without a dog, you can now summon a K-9 unit as backup via your radio when the situation calls for a nose for trouble.
More Than Just Puppies
While the dogs steal the show, the update brings a host of other improvements and additions to Averno City.
- Unmarked Vehicles: New unmarked liveries have been added for the Police Pickup Truck and Buzzard, perfect for undercover operations.
- New Ranks: The level cap has been raised, with additional ranks (PO26-PO30) and unlocks now available.
- Smarter Suspects: Criminals have learned some new tricks, including the ability to hide in portable toilets to evade capture.
- Conduct Penalties: In a darkly humorous but necessary fix, players will now receive an XP penalty for putting a suspect on the train tracks for a collision.
The streets of Averno are safer (and cuter) than ever before. Whether you’re looking to sniff out contraband or just want a loyal partner to watch your back during a shootout, the K-9 Update is a game-changer.
It’s time to report to the kennels – your new partner is waiting.
You’ll find The Precinct available on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. Head over to the Xbox Store if you want access.
