Its shape, often massive, takes up the codes of films and video games where the weapon is used to “survive” in a hostile setting. Long curved blade, aggressive teeth, stylized inscriptions: its aesthetic plays on the imagination of combat and fantasy.
A blade designed to impress, not for utility use
Unlike traditional knives, the zombie knife does not have no practical vocation. Its blade is wide, sometimes holed, serrated, and can exceed the 20 centimeters. Some models have several edges or decorative cutouts. The handle, often fluorescent or metallic, reinforces this “gaming accessory” aspect. This design makes it unwieldy on a daily basis, but particularly intimidating.
A dangerous weapon due to its design
If the zombie knife worries the authorities so much, it is first and foremost because of its physical dangerousness. The combination of teeth, secondary points and a long blade length increases its penetration and laceration power. Numerous reports highlight that this type of weapon has been involved in violent attacks, particularly among young people.
Too easy availability, at the heart of concerns
Before it was banned, you could buy a zombie knife online for a ten euros only. No identity verification, no age limit: a simple click was enough. It’s this accessibility which accelerated its inclusion in the category A1the most restrictive in French law. Sale, acquisition and holding are now totally prohibited.
A symbol of attraction among adolescents
The object appealed to a section of the adolescent public, fascinated by its spectacular aesthetic. Its colors, its “collector’s” aspect and its link with certain popular games facilitated its distribution. Several investigations into school violence show that this weapon appears more and more in seizures made around establishments.
Why its classification changed
With the tightening of regulations in 2025, zombie knives are officially recognized as weapons of particular danger. This classification aims to stop their circulation and reduce the risks, particularly among minors. Their wearing and transport are now prohibited, regardless of age.
