League of Legends Could Be Getting a Full Remake in 2027

Riot Games may be preparing the biggest overhaul in League of Legends history, aiming to attract new players with a full remake reportedly planned for 2027.

League of Legends Expansion Beyond the MOBA

More than 15 years have passed since League of Legends first launched in 2009, and what started as a modest MOBA has become the undisputed giant of the esports world. Few could have imagined back then that LoL would reach this level of dominance.

Its success has gone far beyond the original game.

The universe of Runeterra has expanded into other genres, from Legends of Runeterra and physical card games to the upcoming fighting game 2XKO, not to mention the massive impact of Netflix’s Arcane.

But Riot Games isn’t done yet.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Riot is planning what would be the largest update League of Legends has ever received, one that effectively functions as a full remake of the MOBA.

While nothing has been officially announced, the report comes from journalist Cecilia D’Anastasio, who cites statements from five current and former Riot Games developers, giving the information considerable weight.

According to these sources, League of Legends will receive a remade version in 2027, introducing gameplay changes and, most importantly, a major technical and visual overhaul. The goal is clear: bring new players into the game, and potentially expand beyond PC and mobile to other platforms.

What the League of Legends Remake Could Look Like

Internally known as League Next, Riot has reportedly been working on this new version for years. The plan is for it to launch sometime in 2027, with PC as its main platform.

It remains unclear whether the remake will also arrive on consoles, but if Riot truly wants to grow the player base, a console release would make perfect sense.

Five anonymous developers and former Riot employees confirmed to Bloomberg that League Next is real, and that it represents the biggest update in League of Legends history.

After the mixed reception of the recent modern controls update using WASD movement, Riot appears ready to rethink League of Legends both gameplay-wise and technically.

The remake is expected to significantly refresh:

  • Character visuals and art direction
  • Battle arenas and maps
  • User interface
  • Core technical systems behind the game

Some members of Riot describe the project as a way to give League of Legends “new life” by rebuilding its technical foundations from the ground up.

Controller Support and a Possible Console Future

A logical next step after modernized controls would be full controller support, which would bring the game one step closer to releases on PlayStation, Xbox, or even Nintendo Switch 2.

For now, there’s no word on when Riot will officially announce League Next, but if the goal is a 2027 launch, a reveal sometime in 2026 would make sense. Until then, it’s business as usual on the current PC version of League of Legends.
